This compelling vintage French trade card from the Late 19th century showcases a dramatic sea rescue, depicting sailors saving a shipwreck victim amidst turbulent waves. The scene subtly promotes Alcool de Menthe de Ricqlès, suggesting its vital role in survival. The accompanying text on the front reads: 'Grace à un flacon d’alcool de menthe de Ricqlès, le mécanicien Sauts prolonge pendant plusieurs jours l’existence de ses malheureux compagnons de naufrage de la Ville de Saint-Nazaire.' This translates to: 'Thanks to a bottle of Ricqlès mint alcohol, mechanic Sautis prolonged for several days the existence of his unfortunate companions from the shipwreck of the City of Saint-Nazaire.'
The reverse side of the card boasts '58 Années de Succès' (58 Years of Success) and details a comprehensive list of prestigious awards received at various international exhibitions from 1889 to 1897, including those in Lyon, Bordeaux, and Paris. It highlights 'Alcool de Menthe de Ricqlès' as a versatile product, recommended 'Pour la Santé' (for health) and 'Pour la Toilette' (for hygiene). The card further claims it to be a 'Cordial souverain contre les Maux d'Estomac de Coeur & de Tête' (Sovereign cordial against stomach, heart, and head ailments) and 'indispensable pour l'entretien de la bouche & des dents' (indispensable for the maintenance of the mouth & teeth), emphasizing its broad utility and historical significance in medicinal advertising.
