This distinctive fancy card, dating from the late 19th century (circa 1880s-1890s), showcases a charming and whimsical monochrome illustration. The artwork depicts a comical scene centered around a large snail, harnessed to pull a four-wheeled carriage.

A jester-like figure, complete with a striped outfit and a pipe, appears to be leading the snail, holding a long stick with a string. Another similarly dressed character sits atop the carriage, wielding a whip. In the background, additional figures and snails can be seen, suggesting a slow-motion parade or race. Notably, the carriage features a prominent blank space, which was intentionally left empty. This area was designed for customization, allowing printers or merchants to imprint their store names, advertisements, or even spiritual messages, making each card unique. This 'carte à devise' exemplifies the popular, often humorous, ephemera of the Victorian era.
