This lot includes two charming Late 19th-century French advertising trade cards from 'Aux 4 Frères Achille Grassin' (To the 4 Brothers Achille Grassin), a grand department store located at '24 et 26, rue St-James, Bordeaux'.
One card features two children running alongside a train track, with one exclaiming 'Pourrions couper au court...!' (We could cut it short...!). The second card depicts two boys in what appears to be a telegraph office, with text reading 'M sieur v'là la réponse!' (Sir, here's the answer!). These vibrant lithographs capture a sense of childhood adventure and the burgeoning technologies of the era.
The reverse sides of the cards provide extensive details about the store's offerings, including 'COSTUMES & MANTEAUX' (Costumes & Coats), 'LINGERIE', 'DENTELLES' (Lace), 'HAUTE NOUVEAUTÉ' (High Fashion), and a variety of household goods. They highlight 'LES EXPOSITIONS GENERALES & LES GRANDES MISES EN VENTE EXCEPTIONNELLES' (General Exhibitions & Exceptional Sales), held at the beginning and end of each season. These cards offer a fascinating glimpse into French retail and social life of the period.
