This antique religious holy card from the late 19th century features a poignant color illustration of Christ on the cross. The front depicts Jesus crucified, with the 'INRI' inscription above his head. A sorrowful figure, likely Mary Magdalene, kneels in profound veneration at the foot of the cross, embracing its base. Publisher details 'Turgis Paris' and 'Edit. Pontes' are visible. Below the image, a prayer reads: 'O Jesus! in giving me thy Cross, give me thy spirit of love and trust make me to think only of the happiness of suffering with thee.'
The reverse side presents a detailed prayer titled 'O Good and Most Sweet Jesus! Prayer with Indulgence to be recited before a Crucifix,' accompanied by a smaller black and white engraving of the crucifixion. The extensive text describes conditions for obtaining a 'Plenary Indulgence' (Pius VII. 1821), which includes confession, Holy Communion, and specific prayers before a crucifix, for the intention of His Holiness or to deliver a soul from Purgatory. This devotional piece offers a glimpse into historical religious practices.
