These are two charming Late 19th-century chromolithographed advertising cards, also known as trade cards, for 'Au Mérinos,' a novelty store located at '75, rue de Turbigo, Paris.' Each card features an elaborate urban landscape.
One card depicts a panoramic view of Paris, complete with its coat of arms, and a fashionably dressed woman of the era. A population figure '1,990,000 H.' (1,990,000 Inhabitants) is visible. The other card presents a split view of 'Christiana' (now Oslo) and 'Stockholm,' featuring a woman in traditional Scandinavian folk attire, alongside the text '156,500 Habitants' (156,500 Inhabitants).
The reverse of the cards provides further details about the store, advertising 'NouveautĂ©s Rouhaud-Vienot' and 'Modes Cachemire et MĂ©rinos pour Robes et Costumes,' highlighting that goods are '30 % MOINS CHER QUE PARTOUT' (30% CHEAPER THAN ANYWHERE). The cards also state that 'Les Magasins sont ouverts dimanches et fĂȘtes jusqu'Ă 6 h. du soir.' (The stores are open Sundays and holidays until 6 p.m.), reflecting typical retail practices of the period.
