This impressive handwritten manuscript is a complete French theatrical comedy from the 19th century, entitled “L’amie de pension” (“The Friend from Boarding School”). Extending to around 150 pages, the work is carefully composed in a neat and highly legible hand, presenting a full play in prose across five acts.

The text features a wide cast of characters, including Volpinson, Benoît, Émile, Suzanne, Alice, Léon, and Berthe, whose lively exchanges bring to life a story of friendship, love, ambition, and social manners. Structured with precise stage directions and clearly marked scenes, the manuscript offers a vivid glimpse into the spirit of French comedic theatre during the late 19th century, when plays of wit, social satire, and romantic intrigue were at the height of popularity.

Unlike mass-printed editions, this is almost certainly a unique piece, perhaps prepared for private performance, amateur theatre, or circulation in a literary society. The handwriting is consistent throughout, with careful spacing for dialogue and notations, reflecting the style of a working theatrical script.

Physically, the manuscript survives in good antique condition. The binding is sound, pages turn easily, and the text remains entirely legible. Some light signs of age are present — expected for a manuscript of this era — but overall it is well preserved and suitable both for study and display.

At approximately 150 handwritten pages, this is a substantial and complete work, larger than many comparable surviving manuscripts. Its uniqueness and fine preservation make it an exceptional collectible for enthusiasts of French literature, theatre history, and antique manuscripts.
