This handwritten wedding menu dates back to January 30, 1939, created for the marriage of Ernestine and Charles. The cover is beautifully inscribed in purple ink, with the word Menu highlighted in elegant golden script, giving it a refined and timeless appearance.

Inside, the menu lists two elaborate meals — a luncheon and a dinner. The luncheon began with a vegetable soup, followed by tongue with piquant sauce, jardinière-style medallions, and a dish evocatively named “Bâtonnets Sergent de ville.” Poultry and a fresh lettuce salad completed the savory courses. The meal continued with desserts including Gâteau Bourguignon, assorted cakes, a fruit basket, and was accompanied by wines, coffee, and liqueurs.

The dinner was equally elaborate, starting with a rich broth and salmon with Tango sauce, then chicken “chasseur” with mushrooms, green beans à la Maître d’Hôtel, and leg of lamb with salad. Desserts included Gâteau de la Mariée, a fruit basket, and assorted sweets, again followed by wines, coffee, and liqueurs.

This piece reflects the French culinary tradition and the importance of shared feasts in wedding celebrations. It offers a glimpse into the refined gastronomy of the late 1930s.
