This collection features two distinct French Catholic holy cards, originating from the 1920s and 1930s, each a testament to early 20th-century devotional art.
The first card, framed with a subtle metallic edge, showcases a rich illustration of a wooden cross draped with a rosary, encircled by delicate lilies and small blossoms. It bears the virtues of 'Pauvreté Chasteté Obéissance' (Poverty Chastity Obedience) and a quote attributed to Saint Jerome, emphasizing divine service over worldly honors: 'Il n'est rien de plus honorable et de plus glorieux que de servir Dieu...' (There is nothing more honorable and more glorious than to serve God...).
The second card, characterized by its decorative wavy edge, beautifully depicts Saint Joseph standing alongside a young boy, presumed to be Jesus, amidst a field of white lilies. The card includes the prayer 'SAINT JOSEPH, PRIEZ POUR NOUS.' (Saint Joseph, PRAY FOR US.) and notes that 'Saint Joseph se plaît particulièrement à exaucer ceux qui l'invoquent au nom de Jésus.' (Saint Joseph particularly likes to grant the wishes of those who invoke him in the name of Jesus.). Both pieces are poignant examples of faith-inspired ephemera, published by notable French houses like Bouasse-Jeune and Bouasse-Lebel.
