These two beautifully illustrated French holy cards transport observers to moments of profound religious significance.
The first card depicts Jesus offering the Eucharist, surrounded by supplicants, including children preparing for their First Communion. The accompanying text reads: 'O pain vivant ! Faites que mon âme vive de vous et qu'elle trouve toujours en vous sa joie et ses délices. (St Thomas D'Aquin)', which translates to 'O living bread! Make my soul live by you and may it always find in you its joy and its delights. (St Thomas Aquinas)'. This card encapsulates the spiritual essence of receiving the sacred sacrament.
The second card illustrates the Road to Emmaus narrative, showing Jesus breaking bread with two disciples. Its text states: 'Puis comme ils étaient à table, Il prit le pain, le bénit, le rompit, et le leur présenta. Aussitôt leurs yeux s'ouvrirent et ils le reconnurent. St Luc, ch. 24.', meaning 'Then as they were at table, He took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and presented it to them. Immediately their eyes were opened and they recognized Him. St Luke, ch. 24.'
Both cards feature delicate scalloped edges and vibrant chromolithography, reflecting their devotional purpose. They are cherished pieces of spiritual ephemera, perfect for contemplation or inclusion in religious themed collections.
