This collection showcases two beautiful French vintage religious communion cards, accurately dated to the 1910s. This set offers a poignant glimpse into early 20th-century Catholic traditions surrounding the sacrament of First Communion. The detailed illustrations and ornate, gilded embellishments are characteristic of devotional ephemera from this period.
One card depicts Jesus Christ holding the eucharistic host, set within a striking golden quatrefoil design and delicate autumnal foliage. The French inscription reads: 'Je suis le Pain vivant descendu du ciel. celui qui mange de ce Pain vivra éternellement' (I am the living Bread from heaven, whoever eats this Bread will live forever), referencing St. John chapter VI.
The second card illustrates children receiving communion from priests in a church, framed by elegant gold borders and a grapevine motif. It features the French quote: 'Remerciez avec moi Le Seigneur. Il a fait de mon cœur le tabernacle où Il repose.' (Thank with me the Lord. He made my heart the tabernacle where He rests.) The 'Souvenir de ma Première Communion' (Souvenir of my First Communion) booklet confirms the event for Madeleine Gréger on June 18, 1916.
