This collection presents six early 20th-century French advertising trade cards, each with sepia-toned illustrations and elegant golden borders. These chromolithographs, promotional items, depict delightful narratives reflecting social customs and imagery of the era. Their uniform style and reverse advertising offer a fascinating glimpse into historical French marketing.
A card shows a street vendor with watches interacting with two men. Caption: 'Pour 2 sous vous avez une chaine presque en or, la sureté des montres' ('For 2 cents you have a chain almost in gold, the safety of watches'), illustrating early commerce.
Another features a gentleman presenting a flower to a lady in a garden. Caption: 'Voilà la plus belle rose de mon jardin' ('Here is the most beautiful rose in my garden'), conveying romance.
A third card depicts an agitated man addressing a boy with a parrot. Text: 'M. Pipelet, plumez votre perroquet, faites le rôtir & je vous en achèterai pour deux sous' ('Mr. Pipelet, pluck your parrot, roast it & I will buy it from you for two cents'), humorously proposing a trade.
Outside an 'Epicerie' (grocery store), a man reads an 'Avis' (Notice) while two boys interact with a dog. 'Une soustraction' ('A subtraction') playfully interacts with the notice about stray dogs.
A baker with pastries is surrounded by dogs and chimney sweep 'Fricandeau.' Caption: 'Dis donc, Fricandeau, si tu nous en faisais goûter!' ('Hey, Fricandeau, how about you let us taste some!'), expressing a playful yearning for a treat.
The final card depicts a lively beach scene with three children in early swimwear. 'Le premier bain' ('The first bath') celebrates a joyous summer moment.
