This lot includes five vintage French trade cards, known as chromos, originally advertising 'Chicorée Extra' (Extra Chicory) from C. Beriot of Lille, under 'La Belle Jardinière' (The Beautiful Gardener) brand. These chromolithographed cards, from the 1900s, depict diverse historical and folkloric scenes, offering a glimpse into early 20th-century advertising and popular imagery. Each card is numbered and titled in French.
Card 'No 1081 6' illustrates 'Duel au sabre. 1er Empire, 1812.' (Duel with sabers. 1st Empire, 1812.). It shows two soldiers in Napoleonic uniforms saber-dueling, with observers in the background, set against an outdoor backdrop.
Another card, 'No 1075', portrays 'TYROL. - La Rapide.' (Tyrol. - The Rapid [dance].). This features men and women in Tyrolean costumes joyfully dancing, with musicians providing accompaniment from a raised platform.
Card 'No 1066 4' depicts 'Versailles sous Louis XIV.' (Versailles under Louis XIV.). This elegant scene shows French nobility in sumptuous 17th-century costumes, strolling through the meticulously manicured gardens of Versailles.
Card 'No 1076' showcases a detailed hunting scene: 'Setter Gordon et Braque Saint-Germain' (Gordon Setter and Saint-Germain Pointer). It features two hunters, one with a rifle, accompanied by their two trained hunting dogs in a rural field.
Finally, card 'No 1081 5' presents 'Assaut du chevalier de Saint Georges et de la chevalière d'Eon. — XVIIIe siècle.' (Assault of the knight Saint Georges and the knightess d'Eon. — 18th century.). This illustrates a fencing match between a man and a woman in 18th-century attire, observed by two gentlemen in a picturesque garden.
