This refined 18th-century engraving was probably designed by Charles Eisen (Ch. Eisen inv.) and engraved by Heinrich Guttenberg (H. Guttenberg sc.). It belongs to the celebrated illustrated edition of Les Époux Malheureux, ou Histoire de Monsieur et Madame de… by François-Thomas Baculard d’Arnaud, published in Paris in 1783. This literary series, deeply infused with the sentimental and moral tone of the late Enlightenment, depicts the emotional turmoil and tragic misunderstandings within aristocratic families of the Ancien Régime.
Eisen, one of the most accomplished illustrators of 18th-century France, was renowned for his ability to capture delicate emotions and theatrical intensity within domestic interiors. In this composition, the scene unfolds in a richly ornamented room where a distressed young woman kneels, another confronts a gentleman in anguish, and a clock—symbol of fate and the passage of time—hangs prominently on the wall. Guttenberg’s engraving translates Eisen’s original drawing into a masterpiece of technical subtlety: every texture, from the gleam of silk gowns to the carved woodwork, is rendered with remarkable precision.
This print exemplifies the Rococo sensibility transitioning toward Neoclassicism, combining elegant drama with a moral undertone. The collaboration between Eisen and Guttenberg epitomizes the golden age of French book illustration, when engravings were not mere decoration but essential companions to the text, intensifying its pathos and narrative tension.
Such plates from Les Époux Malheureux are now highly regarded by collectors of 18th-century prints and book illustration, both for their aesthetic beauty and their historical resonance. They represent a refined dialogue between literature and art at the twilight of the ancien world—when grace, sentiment, and virtue were rendered with unparalleled finesse in ink and copper.
